It’s been several years since I’ve been behind the handlebars of a new Polaris Sportsman. The last time, I was deep in the woods of the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania on a particularly cold Thanksgiving week.
Polaris ATVs are known for their size, weight, and strength, even in the toughest conditions. Generally speaking, they lead in payload, towing, and rack capacity across the board. We also consider them one of the best ATVs in America.
I was lucky enough to test the Polaris Sportsman 570, this time in the hot summer heat of southern Florida. In this review, I will go over the Sportsman 570 engine, specs, price, top speed and more, so hang on tight and get ready, because this machine means business.

2019 Polaris Sportsman 570 Engine
I was excited for the opportunity to test out the 2019 Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI base model with the Pro-star engine. When I got to the dealership, I purposely chose the Sportsman 570 base without power steering to see if I really needed to spend the extra $900 for the EPS model. Because the Sportsman 570 is one of the best-selling ATVs on the planet, I wanted to personally test this vehicle on all the terrain it supposedly tackles with ease, from dirt to gravel to sand.
The Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI is powered by a 567cc, Prostar 4-stroke DOHC, 4 valve, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder electronic fuel-injected engine, with 44 horsepower. The base model has an automatic PVT shaft drive transmission with P/R/N/L/H conveniently located near the driver’s right arm for easy shifting when the terrain changes quickly. The power is both smooth and quiet while cruising the trails at higher RPMs.
The towing capacity and suspension on the Polaris Sportsman 570 match the engine specs for an impressive turnout. To see exactly what I mean, watch this:
2019 Polaris Sportsman 570 Top Speed – Trail Tested
I was able to hit a top speed of 62 mph on a paved road, which is very impressive for an entry-level ATV. If I had a little extra blacktop, I think I could have squeezed out a few more MPHs.
The Sportsman 570 comes standard with MacPherson Struts up front with 8.2 inches of travel, while the rear suspension is independent with dual A-Arms and 9.5 inches of travel. Coupled with the Carlisle 25 x 8-12 up front and 25 x 10-12 provided plenty of traction and grip in every obstacle I encountered. I really like the ability to kick out the back wheel during high-speed twists and turns on the trails. As attractive as the Sportsman is, it would look so much meaner if Polaris included a matching set of aluminum wheels versus the old school stamped steel wheels.
The Sportsman braking system boasts a single lever 3-wheel hydraulic disc, conveniently mounted on the left handlebar, that stops all four wheels. In addition to the hand brake, there is a rear-only hydraulic disc foot brake that is located on the right floorboard, ready for difficult down-hill descents. The park in-transmission is simply shifted by a lockable hand lever. To really see how the brakes on the Sportsman 570 work in action, watch my video testing them out:

You will notice how the Sportsman’s ergonomics stand out once you put your leg over the soft, comfortable seat. It’s easy to grip with both knees and does not require you to ride with your feet so far apart like most other big bore ATVs. With an overall dry weight of 704lbs, 48 inches wide, and 11 inches of ground clearance, the Polaris has designed the ATV for a full weekend of fun.
The all-digital display features the speedometer, fuel gauge, hour meter, odometer, dual trip meters, gear indicator, all-wheel drive indicator, volt meter, coolant temperature, high-temperature light, clock, and DC outlet for your phone or camera. I really liked the ability to change the back-lighting of the instrument panel from red to blue when the sun was setting at dusk. It improved visibility during different lighting conditions.
The Polaris is equipped with a 4.5-gallon fuel tank and two dry storage containers. Known as their signature Lock and Ride system, it includes a 6-gallon shallow container in the front and a 2-gallon container in the rear that could easily fit my 25-foot tow strap. Most of the competitors do not offer this amount of both front and rear storage.
With the combined 270lb front and rear rack capacity, 485lb payload capacity, and 1,225lb of trailer towing capacity, the Sportsman isn’t only a thrill-seekers dream, it is also perfect for weekend projects around the house. Polaris equipped the Sportsman with a standard 1-inch receiver hitch which is a nice feature. However, when I need to move a trailer around the house, I only have a 2-inch receiver that I have for my truck or sport utility vehicle.
