While technology has put access and efficiency (quite literally) in the palm of our hands, it’s also introduced us to the concept of never really “clocking out.” Answering emails or reviewing reports at all hours of the day makes us appear to always be working and never really unplugging. Sure, some people can manage this after-hours working with glimpses of connection throughout the day; but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 48% of Americans believe themselves to be “workaholics” and 77% report having experienced burnout at their current jobs at least once! In a world where convenience, autonomy, and freedom are staples of success; overwork, long hours, and burnout seem to be prerequisites.

We’re not here to give career advice, but we do hope to remind you that prioritizing your health, relationships, and regular experiences under non-fluorescent lighting has provided perspective and healing for mankind for over a millennium. The “Great Outdoors” has been a Hollywood theme, the foundation for countless novels, and the trending solution for connection and burnout that more and more Americans each year are turning to for relief. And what do you think is the largest segment of the outdoor economy? Recreational vehicles. The RV market exploded in 2020 and is forecasted to nearly double in the next decade. What used to be a hidden gem of vacationing and weekend warriors is now more than a half a trillion-dollar industry. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, the recreation economy generated $689 billion in consumer spending and 4.3 million jobs in 2020 alone since the COVID-19 pandemic – a majority of which is attributed to the RV industry!

Maybe you’re already convinced on getting an RV and need more Tips or Advice for First Time RV Buyers; or maybe you’re a bit more seasoned and more interested in learning about specific RV Rules You Might Not Know About. However, if you’re brand new to the RV game and are just now researching why Americans are turning to RVs and getting outdoors more, you’ve come to the perfect place! We’ve compiled a list of 7 reasons that should inspire you and your family to join the millions already reaping the benefits:

1. Less Stress

Long distance road trips in a car can be mind-numbing with your vehicle packed high and tight with luggage and your family. Prefer flying? That’s great and all, but not suitable for carrying a lot of things in tow plus it can be very expensive. But with a new RV, you’ll get to see all the sites in comfort and leisure. You’ll never have to worry about delayed or canceled flights, or check-in and check out times. You’re in control-you can choose to eat whenever you want and sleep wherever you want. You can pack (or overpack) to your heart’s content-include all your toys, bicycles, Frisbees®, and more. It’s almost become an ironic joke at how stressful it is to drag your luggage through an airport, stand in crowded lines, and deal with all the other stressors involved in going on vacation. It’s getting worse and worse as more people are flying and more restrictions are being put into place. Not to mention, economic challenges that hurt airline efficiencies and increase cancellations. It’s almost a surprise when a flight isn’t a complete nightmare. On the other hand, traveling in an RV is like living life on your terms. You have your home on wheels and there is no checking in, no waiting in lines, and especially no dealing with rude people. You just hop in and go wherever it is you are going. Sure, there are some challenges, but generally speaking, the only trouble you might encounter are crowded roadways or busy RV parks, but you can always plan around that. And as the saying goes, “A bad day camping is still better than a good day working.”

2. More Family Time

One of the biggest priorities for working people today is quality family time. Family RV trips can be a lot of fun as you travel to different places with your loved ones close by your side. It gives you the perfect opportunity to share some amazing experiences with your family. You’ll be packed in close and tight with each other. While this may lead to some uncomfortable situations and general annoyances, you’ll make some wonderful memories along the way. Families that travel on RV trips spend a lot of time at the campground or enjoying the outdoors together. It’s a relaxing experience and there is plenty of time to enjoy the simple things like playing games and just enjoying each other’s company. While some children might get bored with the whole idea, there are many ways you can add variety and fun to the schedule. Traveling in an RV with a family can give you the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together. It’s a fun way to add a different type of vacation to your family’s repertoire.

3. You’ll Save Money

A 2018 study conducted by CBRE Hotels Advisory Group compares the cost of eight of the most popular vacation types using a hypothetical family of four, consisting of two adults and two children. The study determined that RV vacations are by far the most economical – on average 27% to 62% less expensive on a per day basis compared to other vacation options analyzed. Of course, one needs to purchase an RV to get started; and you may be asking yourself, how much is an RV? There are other costs associated with owning an RV that could add up so you’ll need to do the research before assuming money will be saved. Insurances, poor fuel efficiency, repair costs, and depreciation will all need to be considered. However, when you compare RV travel with other types of travel, you may be surprised at how much money you can save (not to mention the prospect of MAKING money with the advent of Outdoorsy and other such sites). The great thing about considering the total cost of owning an RV is that we have calculated it out for you. There are many ways to ensure that you are saving all that you can while enjoying the RV lifestyle. Cooking your own meals, choosing lower-cost destinations, boondocking, and choosing an RV with great fuel economy are just a few. With a means of transportation and a place to stay all rolled into one, an RV helps you save significantly on your vacation costs. Plus, when you travel with an on-the-go kitchen, you can cut down on the money you’d spend feeding your family while on the road. Many RV owners sell their homes and live full time in an RV. Imagine the savings of ditching mortgage or rent payments. Overnight campsite and RV park fees with hookups typically range only $30 to $50 per night. Better yet-many Walmart locations across the country allow motorhome campers to stop overnight (free!) in their parking lots. Hotels and home shares are creative and convenient, but home-away-from-home costs can add up quickly. According to Money Magazine, owning a small RV lets you travel for only 60-70% of the traditional car-plus-hotel cost. With an RV, there’s less need to spend money on hotels or restaurants. And since you’re saving money on accommodations, you can stay on vacation longer, spend more money on activities, and create possibilities where you had none before. If you choose a travel trailer, there’s no need for a special vehicle to tow it. The bumper pull-hitch is designed to work with a broad range of vehicles. There’s no engine on the trailer, so no need for mechanical upkeep costs. Not to mention Your RV may qualify for some tax deductions. If equipped like a home with permanently mounted sleeping, cooking and bathroom facilities, you may be able to claim it as a second home and get a tax write-off. Be sure to check with your tax accountant regarding your specific situation. “Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a camper, which is kind of the same thing.” – Unknown

4. You’ll Vacation More

Having an RV gives you an always-ready option for going on short excursions. Rather than the once-a-year vacation that families typically enjoy (if that), you’ll be ready to get away for a weekend anytime throughout the year. The more you travel in an RV will also result in spending less on these short trips; depending on where and how far you travel. Overall, this will allow your average vacation to become more inexpensive. The only costs may be the fuel, food (you were going to need anyway), and the cost (if any) of your location or goods purchased at a business. With this convenience, you are more likely to take more time for enjoying it. Packing the family into the RV where everything is already set up is much easier than driving somewhere in a car, the potentially painful airport experience, and paying for hotel stays. Instead of living for the annual vacation, which wears off weeks afterward, you could plan regular getaways that will continue to inspire you and could change your entire perspective!

5. All the Comforts of Home

Why pay for premium seating or fight with a stranger for legroom on a crowded airplane when you can travel in a vehicle that gives you tons of space? Move around as much as you’d like (well if you are not in the driver’s seat of course), enjoy a private bathroom and catch a few winks in the sleeping area, all while heading toward your destination (while making the journey a destination in itself). An RV allows you to take your home with you no matter where you’re traveling. If you want to connect with nature without leaving the comforts of home behind, a travel trailer, fifth wheel or truck camper may be exactly what you need. With an RV, as opposed to tent camping, you can enjoy the outdoors on your own terms-soft seats and beds, electric lights, running water, even heating and air conditioning if you need it. You can stay warm and dry during bad weather. In contrast, you can also choose to live a minimalistic lifestyle in a cozy environment that makes life simpler and more efficient. You can stretch your comfort zone by better focusing on the things in life that you consider the most important, instead of being weighed down by possessions. Minimalism is the new thing; or so we’ve heard.

That’s not to say RV’ing can’t provide high-quality amenities and allow for a glamourous experience with high-end comforts! If you’re searching for the ultimate living experience in an RV, check out a Class A motorhome.

6. Travel with your Pets

One of the main reasons Americans love to travel in their RVs is because there’s room for the WHOLE family. It’s more comfortable for our pets to be in a place they know than to take them from new place to new place. Take Rollick’s very own Willy for example, who knows that his family’s RV is home and his bed, food and water bowls are always in the same spot. It gives him more of a feeling of home when traveling and helps to take the edge off. It’s easier to deal with a pet in a larger RV than it is when traveling in a passenger car. Since space isn’t as cramped, your pet can stretch out rather than be packed in the back seat or your lap. Most RV parks are dog friendly and the RV community, in general, is full of pet lovers. You will see many dogs and cats with other RVers if you spend much time out on the road. It’s why many of them choose the lifestyle. It makes a great way to travel with your furry friends and include them in the family fun. No need to board or arrange pet-sitters or keep your furry friend in a carrier under an airline seat. When you travel by RV, you can bring your pets along and keep them nearly as comfortable as they’d be at home. We know Willy agrees.

7. Freedom, Adventure, and Fun

Sure, we might be a bit biased when it comes to where you should buy your RV. But we most certainly know it’s a fact that RVers typically have a love of travel and exploration-being independent, self-reliant, and sometimes even a little unconventional. You can go wherever you want whenever you want. Owning an RV is a great way to escape daily life, travel at your own pace and experience adventures. Don’t lose sight that owning an RV is fun, and therefore purchasing an RV should be fun too! Start your journey here at GoRollick.com and be sure to tag us @GoRollick in your adventures!
